It's been several days since I finished Cristina Rivera Garcia's No One Will See Me Cry (translated by Andrew Hurley) and I've still sort of singularly failed to formulate an opinion about it; I just keep sort of mentally picking the book up and turning it over and putting it uneasily down again.

In some ways this book reminds me of A Month in the Country, in that both are historical novels that delicately build up a picture of lives destabilized by and lived in the cracks after an epoch-shaking event, while carefully avoiding -- tracing the parameters of, writing around, turning the camera consistently away from -- the event itself. The difference is that A Month in the Country does in fact feel light, delicate, balanced against the heavy thing at its center, while No One Will See Me Cry isn't in any way a light book; aside from the heaviness of its subject matter, feels laden with symbolism at every turn, although the symbolism itself is often specific and startling.

The premise: in 1920s Mexico City, an aging, morphine-addicted photographer who's been hired to take portraits of asylum inmates meets Matilda, a woman he last photographed many years ago, when she was a prostitute. Joaquin engages in a kind of narrative barter with, first the asylum doctor, then with Matilda herself, in an attempt to understand her story and how it intersects with his own to bring them both to this asylum. Both of them, it turns out, formatively knew and formatively loved the same woman, a revolutionary, in the years before the war -- but neither of them was actually involved in the Revolution, neither of them were active agents for or against the transformation of their livetimes; Joaquin describes himself more than once as the only photographer of his generation who didn't take any photographs of the war, and Matilda was, at the time, involved in an emotional affair with a desert landscape.

There are some tropes that one expects, and is braced for, around Women and Lost Women and Madwomen, especially when insanity is used as a thematic metaphor around national trajectory, especially when all that is inextrictable from questions of poverty and indigineity. Rivera Garcia is definitely deploying some of those tropes with purpose and to a point and I absolutely do not know enough to have a full sense of what she's doing with them. This is one of those situations where I wish I was reading a book in context of a class or a club. As it is, what I'm left with is interest, unease, some beautiful and surprising images, and a sense that I ought to read a lot more about the Mexican Revolution.

trails to azure - final thoughts

i beat trails to azure last night, so here's some wrap-up thoughts on the crossbell duology.

first, my backloggery status update and spoiler-free azure review:

43 hours. All sidequests completed and hit max Detective Rank. Bonded with Elie and every NPC except KeA (dunno how that happened).

(it was only 43 hours thanks to the turbo button, which i held down for most trash mob fights. thanks turbo button.)

Azure takes some big swings that don't always land, but I appreciate the effort. Frankly, the twists in this game constantly had me on my toes. It's definitely the stronger of the duology, but parts of it are exhausting — the extremely long final chapter (and dungeon), the backtracking, etc. That said, on the whole it's better than the sum of its parts and I'm glad to have played it.

which pretty much sums it up, tbh. but let's get into the weeds.

full spoilers below )

so now it's on to clair obscur! hoping to (re)start it tonight, though new ffxiv patch this week will definitely distract me in the coming days. i don't think clair obscur is that long, though, so it should be easy to get it finished in may. here's hoping!

Hello to the new people. The last time I made an intro post was, well, about three months ago, give or take, so I'll just use it, honestly.

Stuff that's maybe not mentioned explicitly on there, er:

1). I'm on Mastodon as titania@retro.pizza. If you're also on the fedi you're free to follow me, though I haven't really had the bandwidth to post there much of late. Most of what gets shared there are sourdough bakes and/or other cooking/baking stuff.

2). I'm on AO3 as hafnia. Most of what's up there is E-rated original work. I am never going to pressure anyone to read it, but I like writing and sharing what I write, so!

One of the things I have been working on in therapy is trying to be more open and vocal about the work I do that I'm proud of, allowing myself to take pride in it and identify with it. Without going too in-depth about it: a good portion of my childhood and adulthood was a lot of, "no one wants to hear from you", both about hobby stuff and professional stuff. So, I'm trying to actively refute that, both because that's no way to live, and also because I am proud of a lot of what I've done.

To that end, there's a post up that talks about recent writing. If you want a T-rated (for language, solely) example of what I write about, A Spacer's Guide to Xenovarmints is probably a good place to start :)

3). I run a a lot of tabletop. Like, truly, a lot — ttrpg is one of my main hobbies, though I try not to talk about it much here, because I feel like hearing about campaigns you're not actively involved in gets pretty dully. Still, to that end, I am pretty much always happy to welcome new people to the table. If you have any curiosity about tabletop and where to start, I'm happy to talk to you about it. Everything I run is done via Discord (I'm hafnium_iv_oxide on there), and I run a small community where we talk about games, run stuff, and just generally hang out. (It will likely be moved off Discord sometime this summer, if I can get my shit together to make it happen, but, well, for now....)

I think, er, that's most of it. Will say that I try to generally be a friendly person, so if you are left going, "er...?" and have questions, just ask.

I am pants at commenting a lot of the time — I mean to, when I have something to say, but autism + mild social anxiety (as a result of being on the spectrum, ha) means that I occasionally have a difficult time making myself hit "post". Please know that I do read regularly — I check my reading page at least once a day — and I will never go, "what, you?" at someone commenting on my journal. ♥

The deadline for assignments has now passed! We've temporarily closed the collection to take stock. We will likely have the post-deadline pinch hits out approximately a day from now. Thanks!

UPDATE: The collection is re-opened for posting and queries have been sent out. If the assignment (not treat) you've written has not been approved, check your email! We've probably reached out to you.

Woke up at 8:30 and didn't bother going back to sleep since my alarm was set for 9:00. Had breakfast and coffee, then showered and dressed. Got to my Al-anon meeting early for a change.

The meeting was good but a weird thing happened. I wore my pink Bronx Zoo baseball cap, and it disappeared, I went to the bathroom at the end of the meeting, when I came out it was not anywhere. Someone must have taken it... who and why? Hopefully it turns up next week.

Anyway, no one went to the diner again today. I got a ride home from L, we had some nice talk on the way there. I was early enough to the Starsky and Hutch chat that I managed to see the whole episode of The Snitch.

We played some Starsky and Hutch themed games afterward, and then chatted for several hours, until just before 7:00.

The FWiB and I tried to Team then but had technical difficulties, I think on his end for a change, that wee only resolved after almost a half hour of attempting it. As a result we only talked for an hour and 15 minutes, an then got off.

Then I had dinner, and then went into the bedroom. I called [personal profile] mashfanficchick and we talked for quite awhile. Zer game ze was going to today was rained out, and ze doesn't yet know if the replacement ticket is good for tomorrow or not. If not, we'll probably get together.

Then I downloaded the new Lois McMaster Bujold Penric and Desdemona novella on my Nook. And I texted the Kid about seeing Steve and Amy on Thursday, and also about the shooting at the White House Corespondents dinner tonight. No response.

Then it was time to feed the pets, and start here.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. My meetings and the people there.

3. Ride from L.

4. The Starsky and Hutch fandom.

5. New Bujold novella.

6. My pets.
