Dear Annie: I have been married for 12 years to a good man whom I love very much, but I dread nearly every holiday, birthday dinner and casual Sunday visit with his family. On the surface, my in-laws are charming, polished and the sort of people everyone else describes as "so nice." But behind that polished exterior is a steady drip of cutting remarks aimed almost entirely at me.

My mother-in-law has a talent for delivering insults with a smile. She will look at a meal I brought and say, "Well, that's certainly ... rustic," or ask whether I am "still doing that little job of yours," even though I work full time and do quite well. My father-in-law joins in with jokes about how their son "used to eat better before marriage" or how I have "modern ideas" whenever I disagree with them about anything from parenting to politics to how often we should visit.

The comments are always subtle enough that if I react, I look oversensitive. But after years of this, I feel like I am being pecked to death by very well-dressed chickens.

What hurts most is that my husband says, "That's just how they are," and urges me to ignore it to keep the peace. But there is no peace for me. I leave these gatherings replaying every jab in my head for days.

How do I tell my in-laws to stop without blowing up the family? And how do I get my husband to understand that "just ignore it" is not a strategy, it is surrender? -- Bruised by Politeness

DEAR ABBY: I'm struggling with what to do about my first job out of college. I've been here for four months, and while I expected a learning curve, I didn't expect the environment to feel so hostile. My boss yells at me across the office for small, easily fixable mistakes. The latest incident involved her slamming her hands on the table several times and shouting, "What are you talking about?" while I was trying to clarify a question. I couldn't even get my words out.

I'm in the second round of interviews for another job with a different company, and I'm torn about what to do. My parents think I should stick it out to avoid being seen as a job hopper. But I feel anxious going into work every day. This environment is eroding my confidence.

Furthermore, I will be moving to a new town with my fiance next year, so I'm wondering if it's smarter to stay for another several months or take the new job (which will be remote, if I get it) even though I'm worried I might not like that one either.

Am I too sensitive? Should I leave a job this quickly, or push through until my move? How do I make the right decision when I feel guilty no matter what I choose? -- CONFLICTED IN NEBRASKA

Legally Blonde (2001): "If you're going to let one stupid prick ruin your life," says the professor at the beauty salon, with the eyebrow lift of a person who has swept past more than one such prick, "you're not the girl I thought you were."

It's not a subtle film---I appreciate the actors for every reaction shot that isn't hammered in---but it didn't and doesn't need to be. First viewing.

Never mind the totally impossible scenes. Twenty-five years on, one of the most anachronistic aspects is the idea of a US metro's local salon as what's currently called a third place, where individuals from disparate demographics may meet without surprise. Also, it took me a moment (I hadn't looked up the film's release year yet) to realize that Emmett's car is supposed to be an old clunker. I remember when that model of car was introduced.

The thing whereby YouTube offers access for "free, with ads" and then doesn't show ads across several days' interrupted sittings isn't bad. I have another 15 minutes to go, some other day (eyestrain), but this seems like enough for a post.

Doors of Sleep, by Tim Pratt

This is the first book I've read by Tim Pratt. I had somehow gotten the impression that they wrote very highbrow, abstract sf that I probably wouldn't enjoy. I have no idea where that came from because this novel, which I tried because of the delightful premise, is completely not that and I enjoyed it very much.

Zax Delatree, a social worker/mediator from a utopian post-scarcity world, develops a condition where he travels to a random other world every time he sleeps. Through a lot of trial and error, he also discovers that he can take with him items on his person, and also other people if he's touching them when he falls asleep. If they're asleep too, they will arrive fine. If they're not, they arrive insane. ("The Jaunt" is one of many spottable influences.) Here's Zax and his companion, Minna, explaining their situation:

"Do you know the word 'multiverse?' [...] We're travelers, sort of. Sort of explorers. And sort of refugees."

"If this is true, the implications are immense."

"The implications are also very small and also personal," said Minna.

This is the most charming and heartfelt novel I've read in a while. It's mostly a picaresque, with Zax and Minna (and assorted friends and pursuing enemies) visiting all sorts of colorful other worlds, exploring and surviving and trying to be of use. The many worlds are great, I loved Zax and Minna and the friends they meet, and it's full of sense of wonder and hopefulness and people being kind under extremely difficult circumstances. I also liked that Zax and Minna are friends who are explicitly not romantically or sexually involved with each other.

There is a sequel, Prison of Sleep, which I have ordered.

Sadly, my experience with libraries at that time was just wandering the stacks and taking out interesting books. I vaguely remember using a microfiche once, for example, and all I remember is you have to turn the knob the opposite direction of what you're viewing. Research is a foreign land to me.

The googling I've done tells me that this year was smack dab in the middle of converting to computer use from old style card catalogues, etc. but no information on how a person goes about doing research. I would love to have a helpful librarian character too.

This is for an exchange fic so I'm putting the rest under a cut. Please don't click if you requested a canon set in the 80s in a current exchange. Thank you. Read more... )

Any help in how this would work or a website that has this research finding information would be very appreciated.

Edited to Add: Thanks for the suggestions so far but I actually need to have my character do some research beyond phone books for the story to work. What I'm getting is libraries might still? be using card catalogues rather than early computers but how would magazines and trade journals be listed in the card catalogue so that a specific company could be researched? Thank you for any suggestions. They do spark my imagination for adding to the scene.

ETA2: Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. I have what I need now. This community is a great resource.

Hi!

I've been embarking on a project to archive the Jrockyaoi LiveJournal community, which centered around RPF of Japanese rock/visual kei musicians, and as I've been doing the archiving, I've been noticing a lot of things! Overarching trends, fandom culture stuff, funny lines in fics, all of these that I wanted to share with people!

Even if you don't know who any of these guys are that I'll namedrop, if you're interested in Livejournal fandom culture, anime fandom culture, or RPF fandoms and how they operate, I'd really love my posts to spark discussion (and to maybe vkeipill some people...)

If this sounds like something you'd be into, here's my first post!

I've got some colorful dreamsheep icons up over at [community profile] dreamsheep in celebration of [community profile] 3weeks4dreamwidth! I'm also taking color and color combination requests.

I'm aiming to get a Mood Theme in a Hurry calendar done and posted by this evening, but I've also got Surprise Cramps to deal with, so we'll see what wins 😑

Edit: Mood Theme in a Hurry Calendars are now available! They only cover the Minimum and Medium mood tracks, because I am not currently prepared to either stick six or seven moods on a day, or pick and choose which of the remaining 98 moods to include on the calendar. (I'd probably want to go for at least 72 moods total, including the 34 already on the Medium Track calendar, but that's still 38 moods to pick out!)

A quick sample:

I've got eight nine colors plus three monochrome options to check out over there. If you've got a color-themed journal, one of these might be just what you're looking for!
